Pilar Medina, Ph.D. is the Head of the Haemostasis, Trombosis, Arteriosclerosis and Vascular Biology Research Group at the Health Research Institute of La Fe University and Polytechnic Hospital (Valencia, Spain). Dr. Medina is highly committed with the advance of the specialty, for she is Secretary of the Board of the Spanish Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (SETH) since 2022, and former Vice-President (2018-2022) and Vocal (2011-2018). Dr. Medina earned her PhD in Biology at the University of Valencia and obtained the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Leiden University Medical Center (The Netherlands) under the supervision of Prof. Rogier Bertina. Dr. Medina is an expert in the protein C pathway and leads the SETH Working Group for the Genetic Characterization of protein C Deficiencies, thus supporting the clinical management of Spanish families with protein C deficiency. Her research expertise focuses on the protein C pathway, cancer-associated thrombosis, and the role of NETosis and immunothrombosis on several disorders, mainly cancer. She has published 63 peer-reviewed research articles on this topic. Dr. Medina has participated in 80 research projects, being principal investigator in 28. She has been the recipient of 41 research awards. Author of 3 patents and 2 online software intellectual property registrations. Dr. Medina is highly involved in education and mentoring as she is an Associate Professor at University CEU Cardenal Herrera and also lectures in Masters at the University of Valencia and the Polytechnic University of Valencia. Finally, she has been in the Scientific-Organizing Committees of the 23rd International Congress on Thrombosis 2014, SETH Congresses in 2015, 2018 and 2019 and the ECTH 2023. Finally, she has been the coordinator of the Educational Program of the SETH Congress 2023. Currently, she is the coordinator of the Post-ISTH course organized by SETH.
