OC 72.1 - "TIPS for Trainees - Understanding When to Test for Thrombophilia in Pediatrics: Developing an Educational Video for Improved Patient Care"

Background: Inherited thrombophilias present a challenge in clinical decision-making. Evidence that trainees and clinicians struggle with offering the right test to a patient is highlighted by frequent inappropriate testing. In pediatrics, there are additional complexities for genetic testing and the interpretation of protein-based assays. This highlights the need for enhanced education on this topic.

Aims: Development of a validated online educational tool providing guidance on when to test for inherited thrombophilia in pediatrics.

Methods: Primary audience: physician trainees (excluding hematology subspecialty trainees).
Three stages: script and content, storyboard development, and video production/analysis.(1) Script creation and content review by education and pediatric thrombosis experts. (2) Storyboard validation by a multidisciplinary team of experts in pediatrics and hematology using the Delphi technique. Storyboard review for content and face validity by trainees. (3) 2D video creation with review by target audience residents tested for content, clarity, and knowledge attainment through a pre/post-knowledge test and feedback survey. Content covers the pathophysiology of thrombophilia, types of thrombophilia, risk stratification, and appropriate timing for and interpretation of thrombophilia testing. The video highlights potential risks and limitations of thrombophilia testing, emphasizing careful consideration before diagnostic workup and recommends referral if testing is warranted.

Results: Development of an educational video titled "TIPS for Trainees - Understanding When to Test for Thrombophilia in Pediatrics". The structured approach involved multiple rounds of questionnaires with experts in education, thrombophilia, pediatrics, hematology, and hematopathology. Their input ensured content and face validity, resulting in a well-rounded and accurate script. The video was tested for knowledge attainment and reviewed by 50 trainees to ensure it is a useful training tool.

Conclusion(s): TIPS is an educational resource for trainees that aims to enhance knowledge of thrombophilia while addressing the practical aspects of testing in clinical settings.
