Background: In the past decades the arsenal of antithrombotic medication and combinations thereof has expanded exponentially. This has generally improved the efficacy and safety of antithrombotic treatment and created new opportunities for personalized medicine. However, many physicians are overwhelmed by choices (indications, cancer and specific conditions, duration, safety issues, combinations, interactions, and side-effects). Bleedings remain important complications that may require reversal agents and further tailoring of medication.

Aims: the CAS-AM course was established to provide a highly interactive, problem-based learning (PBL) environment for starting and mid-career physicians of diverse backgrounds, to improve their knowledge and skills and to provide a basis for leadership in antithrombotic management.

Methods: the CAS-AM course comprises of 2 in-person course weeks, during which participants and faculty discuss highly complex cases, supported by lectures and workshops. Network building is promoted by social events. During the 6-month interval in between monthly online mentor meetings in small groups of participants and faculty discuss practice issues, as well as the progress of the participant’s personal portfolio, exploring personal learning objectives. Each participant also has a dedicated mentor for discussing additional, personal matters. The course concludes with an examination of the participant’s portfolio and, if satisfactory, a certificate from Maastricht University.

Results: Since 2021, 41 participants from in total 11 countries (European and USA) participated in 2 CAS-AM courses, the second course is ongoing. In the first course, all 20 participants successfully completed their portfolio, and all obtained a certificate. Evaluations after the first course uniformly confirmed the advantage of the PBL based learning, the networking, the informal interactions with faculty, the progress made in leadership skills. Minor areas of improvement related to the density of the program, and suggestions for addressing specific topics.

Conclusion(s): The CAS-AM course provides personalized training for physicians, empowering them to become leaders in antithrombotic management.
