Berend Isermann studied medicine in Würzburg, Bristol (England) and New Haven, CT, USA. After a medical internship (Heidelberg University Hospital), he worked for 5 years as a researcher in Milwaukee, WI, USA, at the Blood Research Institute. Back in Heidelberg, he received specialist training in internal medicine, endocrinology and laboratory medicine, as well as qualifications as a diabetologist (DDG) and clinical chemist (DGKL). In 2011 he was appointed to the W3 professorship in laboratory medicine at the University of Magdeburg, and in 2019 to the W3 professorship in laboratory medicine at the University of Leipzig.
The Isermann group investigates mechanisms through which altered protease dependent signaling causes vascular dysfunction, cellular dysfunction, and sterile inflammation.
