Mariana Sá Pereira, PhD in Biological Chemistry, is a Professor at the Leopoldo De Meis Institute of Medical Biochemistry, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (UFRJ). She is an associated researcher in the Glycobiology Program and a member of the Oncology Program at the same university. She has extensive experience in studying the chemical structure and biological activity of glycosaminoglycans, with a particular interest in the pharmacological potential of these molecules in pathologies such as thrombosis, cancer, and inflammation. In recent years, she has delved into the study of different heparins and derivatives as anticoagulants and potential antimetastatic agents, focusing on their mechanisms of action and safety profiles. As an analog of the ubiquitous glycosaminoglycan heparan sulfate, heparin interferes with several biological events and processes, and the mechanisms of its biological actions are not yet fully understood. In 2019, she contributed to the development of the monograph on bovine-derived heparin published by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia, a pioneering initiative worldwide.
