My name is Joanne Dunster and I am a Mathematical Biologist working in the Institute for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research at the University of Reading. My route into academia was somewhat unconventional having spent the early years of my career working as a data consultant in safety critical industries before undertaking a PhD in Mathematical Biology. My research utilises a variety of mathematical, computational and data analytic approaches in which I gained expertise, both in industry and academia; I am applying these methods to aid the understanding of the mechanisms that underpin clot formation. I am interested in how we can integrate a wide variety of experimental data with computational and mathematical models not only to gain new insight into underlying mechanisms but also to quantify how these vary across populations and in different disease states. It is envisaged that this will help understand better the complexities of cardiovascular disease development and the establishment of more personalised approaches to prevention and treatment.
