Mirta Schattner, PhD, Laboratory of Experimental Medicine-CONICET-National Academy of Medicine, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Dr. Mirta Schattner is Principal Investigator and Director of the Laboratory of Experimental Thrombosis and Immunobiology of Inflammation, Institute of Experimental Medicine, CONICET - National Academy of Medicine, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Professor at the University of Buenos Aires. Dr. Schattner’s research focuses on the study of megakaryothrombopoiesis and platelet biology in health and disease, with particular interest in inflammatory and infectious diseases. One of the main interests of the lab is the immunological side of megakaryocytes and platelets. They have found that megakaryocytes can play a role in antiviral defense by both producing and responding to interferon, and that activation of Toll-like receptors in hematopoietic progenitors by pathogens regulates platelet biogenesis. They also contribute to studying the interaction of platelets with inflammatory leukocytes such as neutrophils and monocytes/macrophages. In 2022, Dr. Schattner was one of the recipients of the ISTH's Esteemed Career Award.
