Dr Awodu works as a consultant haematologist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and as a professor of haematology at the University of Benin School of Medicine. Her goal in both clinical practice and research is to improve knowledge and management of bleeding and thrombotic disorders in sub-Saharan Africa.
Her pioneering work on lupus anticoagulant in Nigeria ignited interest in antiphospholipid antibodies in the West African sub-region.
Prof. Awodu has trained and mentored many young haematologists. She has received over thirty invitations to give lectures both domestically and internationally.
In Nigeria, guidelines for treating venous thromboembolism and haemophilia have been developed, with Prof. Awodu serving as chair or member of the panel.
In addition, she serves as the director of the South-South Haemophilia Treatment Centre (HTC) in Nigeria and as the chair of the Nigeria Society for Haematology's thrombosis and hemostasis group. She has held positions as head of the department of haematology, assistant dean of the University of Benin's School of Medicine, board member, and member of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria's Faculty of Pathology's court of examiners and judges.
She reviews articles for several domestic and foreign journals.
She is an elected member of the council of the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH).
Prof. Awodu is the current president of the Nigerian Society for Haematology and Blood Transfusion. She is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine.
