Dr. Evi X. Stavrou is the Oscar D. Ratnoff Professor of Medicine and Hematology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and Staff Hematologist at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. She received her MD degree summa cum laude from Semmelweis University, completed her Internal Medicine residency at Johns Hopkins University-Sinai program and Hematology-Oncology fellowship at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. The principal research focus of the Stavrou lab is on the Factor XII – uPAR interactome and neutrophil cell biology in health and disease. Ongoing research encompasses the mechanistic elucidation of zymogen FXII functions, mapping the FXII-uPAR interaction, and identifying the mediators through which the FXII-uPAR signaling axis influences neutrophil behavior. Main research interests in the Stavrou lab are in i) structural biochemical characterization of FXII-protein interactions, ii) small molecule development to selectively abrogate FXII-mediated responses, and iii) disease-targeted drug delivery systems. Disease states of interest include chronic diabetic wounds, deep vein thrombosis and ovarian tumor maintenance. Work from the Stavrou lab has been published in journals including Blood, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Communications and the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Dr. Stavrou serves as Associate Editor of the journal Frontiers in Hematology and Thrombosis Research, and is Co-Chair of the ISTH-SSC Sub-Committee on FXI and the Contact System. Dr. Stavrou’s work is funded by the National Institutes of Health, VA Research & Education Foundation, VA Advanced Platform Technology Center, the Case-Coulter Translational Research Partnership and the NIH Clinical & Translational Science Collaborative.
