Dr. Pudur Jagadeeswaran is a Regents Professor at the University of North Texas, and he has been conducting research on the genetics of blood coagulation for forty years. He started his independent career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He rose to the rank of a Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He has been at UNT as a Professor of Biology since 2005. He cloned human clotting factor genes and identified several mutations in hemophilia B and other clotting factor deficiencies. He generated a transgenic mouse that recapitulated the factor IXLeiden hemophilia. However, the mouse model could not determine which factor activates the mutant promoter during aging. Therefore, he switched to the zebrafish model to address this issue and pioneered the introduction of the zebrafish model to study the genetics of clotting disorders. He characterized the zebrafish coagulation system and the thrombocyte biology and developed many methods to study hemostasis. Jagadeeswaran published more than 100 papers. NIH has funded him for several years and currently has an R01 grant. Jagadeeswaran taught medical students. graduate students and undergraduates for 40 years. He trained 18 postdoctoral fellows, 21 graduate students (Ph.D. and Master's), and more than 75 High School, undergraduate, and MD students in his laboratory. Some of his postdoctoral fellows and graduate students are faculty members at US universities and abroad. He has 7 Ph.D. students, one postdoctoral fellow, and three undergraduates. Jagadeeswaran served on several panels of the NIH study section. He is the editorial board member of the Blood Coagulation and Fibrinolysis and the BBA. He has organized national and international meetings, chaired conferences, and given invited seminars at many universities. He received the University Distinguished Research Professor and Regents Professor awards.
