PhD student
Semmelweis University Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Budapest, Budapest, Hungary
My name is Kata Balog Virág, and I am a second-year PhD student at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. I am a research biologist. I earned my bachelor’s degree in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Szeged, Hungary, in 2019. With a particular interest in immunology, I pursued a master’s degree in molecular, immuno, and microbiology at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. For my master’s thesis, I worked in an immunology research group studying the roles of B and T cells in human autoimmunity, specifically focusing on the PD-1 receptor and its ligand, PD-L1.
After graduating in the summer of 2021, I continued as a research associate. In 2022, I joined Semmelweis University in Budapest, working with the Hungarian Centre of Excellence in Molecular Medicine's (HCEMM) Thrombosis and Haemostasis research group. Here, I enrolled in the pathobiochemistry PhD program. Our group explores the intricate mechanisms of haemostasis, emphasizing the roles of factor XIII, tranexamic acid, red blood cells, and neutrophils in the modulation of fibrinolysis.
