I am a hematologist with expertise in thrombosis and hemostasis. Within my clinical practice I
see many patients with thrombophilia, thrombosis, and bleeding disorders. My main interest within the area of
thrombosis is to identify mechanisms of thrombosis in patients with cancer and in patients with unprovoked
thrombosis. Thrombosis is the second cause of death in cancer patients and causes significant morbidity in
these patients. Therefore, determining biomarkers and coagulation parameters that can help us to identify what
cancer patients are at high risk for developing thrombosis will prevent this potential lethal complication. Another
significant area of interest is women’s health specifically focusing on pregnancy in women with hereditary and
acquired thrombotic and bleeding disorders.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was a panel member of the American Society of Hematology (ASH)
living guidelines on the use of anticoagulation for thrombophrophylaxis in patients COVID-19. Education to
medical students, residents and fellows constitutes an essential part of my work and over many years I had the
privilege to train numerous residents and fellows who are now working in excellent academic institutions.
