Graduated with honours in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Melbourne, Australia in 1980, Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1990, MSc in epidemiology in London in 1991, MD in 1998. Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
He is recognised internationally for his pioneering research in:
1. The early use of and directing the development of thromboprophylaxis in medical patients (the largest indication for anticoagulation) leading to regulatory approval and guideline directed routine practice.
2. Leading the only two studies which have been the basis for regulatory approval for extended thromboprophylaxis in medical patients.
3. The development of thromboprophylaxis in surgery and cancer.
4. The early use and development of LMWH in thromboprophylaxis and treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE).
5. Epidemiology of VTE.
6. Early use and development of LMWH (and later parenteral and direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) for outpatient therapy of VTE
7. Development of the five approved DOACs.
8. Use of machine learning (AI) in VTE and AF research.
In addition to clinical work, teaching, thesis supervision and examining, he is involved in designing, managing and analysing clinical trials from Phase I to IV. He sits on international steering committees for multicentre trials and epidemiological and pharmacoeconomic studies.
Dr Cohen has written and co-authored over 550 publications and is on the editorial board of several journals. He has over 40 publications in The Lancet and New
England Journal of Medicine, and over 50 publications in British Medical Journal, Blood, Circulation, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
