Zhen Xu, PhD, is a Research Scientist at the Versiti Blood Research Institute, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. She is a well-trained structural biologist, and her research interests lie in understanding the structural and functional basis of integrin activation mechanisms in blood cells. Her current work is centered on the study of kindlin-3, a key integrin activator in cells of hematopoietic origin. She has successfully determined the crystal structure of kindlin-3 and conducted structure-based functional analyses. Her research has advanced the understanding of the molecular basis of leukocyte adhesion deficiency III (LAD-III), a rare blood disorder resulting from mutations in kindlin-3.
