Professor Robert L Medcalf Ph.D. Monash University Australia
Prof Robert Medcalf has been undertaking research in the field of Fibrinolysis for over 30 years. He undertook a post-doctoral position in the Department of Haematology, Lausanne, Switzerland (1986-1993) where he worked on the transcriptional regulation of the plasminogen activating (Fibrinolytic) system. He returned to Australia in 1993 to work in the Department of Medicine at Monash University in Melbourne and where he was one of the co-founders of the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases (ACBD). He has continued at the ACBD until the present day. His major research focus has continued to focus on the fibrinolytic system in the broadest sense, with a particular interest in its role on the innate immune response and in the central nervous system and how this impacts on ischaemic stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) and more recently in relation to cerebral amyloid angiopathy. Prof Medcalf was President of the 2019 ISTH Congress in Melbourne. He has previously served as Associate Editor of the J Thromb Haemost for 7 years and is currently co-Editor-in-Chief of Thrombosis Journal.
