Dr. Asher Mendelson MD PhD is a Clinician-Scientist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba, and an ICU at Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg. He graduated with residency training in Internal Medicine at UBC, and Critical Care fellowship Western University. He received a Master’s in Experimental Medicine at UBC, and a PhD in Medical Biophysics at Western University studying the regulation of blood flow in capillary networks.
The focus of Dr. Mendelson’s research program is microvascular physiology in sepsis and critical illness. He has been awarded the prestigious MMSF Du Val Henson Clinical Research Professorship (2022-2025). He is the project co-lead for the National Preclinical Sepsis Platform: a multicentre preclinical trial within the CIHR-funded Sepsis Canada Research Network. At the bedside, he is developing advanced biomedical optics and signals analysis tools to monitor microvascular oxygen delivery and perfusion. He is also the Translational Biology and biobanking lead for numerous randomized controlled trials in sepsis. Dr. Mendelson is the communications executive for the Canadian Critical Care Translational Biology Group.
