Dr. Szumam Liu, Ph.D., is a scientist specializing in molecular biology and the pathogenesis of human diseases, affiliated with the University of Kansas Medical Center. With a solid foundation in biotechnology and a Ph.D. in basic science, Dr. Liu has extensively studied gene expression, hemostasis, and thrombosis.
Initially focused on the role of microRNAs in disease development, Dr. Liu's postdoctoral research shifted to protein arginine methylation, a crucial epigenetic modification. Recent studies have explored PRMT1's role in regulating megakaryocyte differentiation and platelet function.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Long Zheng, an expert in hemostasis and thrombosis, Dr. Liu investigates how arginine methylation affects ADAMTS13 secretion and function. This research aims to identify methylation sites and understand the underlying molecular mechanisms. Insights gained may lead to novel therapies, such as PRMT1 inhibitors, for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and related disorders.
