Marina Camera is Full Professor of Pharmacology at the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Università degli Studi di Milano and head of the Unit of Cellular and Molecular Biology of Cardiovascular Disease at Centro Cardiologico Monzino IRCCS in Milan.
The mission of Prof. Camera’s research lab is to implement the thrombotic risk stratification of patients with cardiovascular disease in order to provide a scientific rational for tayloring the pharmacological treatment. This is achieved by focusing on the identification of circulating biomarkers with predictive capacity. The strategies used to achieve these goals take advantage from an established expertise in laboratory-to-bedside research programs and a strong background in cardiovascular pharmacology - in particular on drugs modulating platelet function- and in the mechanisms regulating haemostasis and thrombosis. This background is instrumental to gain insights into the molecular mechanisms involved 1) in the pathophysiology of the thrombotic complications of cardiovascular disease and 2) in the interindividual variability in response to antiplatelet therapy.
In this context, the research programs of Prof. Camera’s research lab have been developed during the years focusing on three main players: platelets, as the main cellular components of the thrombus; Tissue Factor (TF), the key protein involved in the activation of the blood coagulation cascade; circulating microvesicles (MVs), whose signature provides important insights into the dysfunctional cellular compartment in different clinical settings.
A significant contribution of Prof. Camera’s group in this specific research field has been the identification and deep characterization of TF expression by circulating human platelets (in 2003). More recently, the predictive value of this biomarker for all cause and cardiovascular mortality has been validated. The project “International multi-center validation of flow cytometry methods for the detection of Tissue Factor-positive platelets” coordinated by Prof Camera has been selected by ISTH for funding during the 2023 grant year.
