Associate Professor Freda Passam is a clinical academic haematologist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and School of Medicine of the University of Sydney, Australia.
Freda received her medical degree and PhD in Greece in 2007. She followed postdoctoral research, initially in Steve Krilis’ lab in the University of New South Wales, on the pathogenesis of antiphospholipid syndrome, and then in Bruce and Barbara Furie’s lab in Harvard University, on the role thiol isomerases in thrombosis.
She established her independent lab in the Charles Perkins Centre, Heart Research Institute, University of Sydney, in 2018. In the hospital, she manages patients with thrombotic and bleeding disorders. In the lab, her research has two main directions: 1. Discovery of new pathways of platelet hyperreactivity in cardiovascular disease using platelet proteomics, and 2. Understanding mechanisms of endothelial damage in immune thrombotic disorders (HIT and VITT).
Her lab has identified novel functions of platelet thiol isomerases and recently the link between endoplasmic reticulum stress and platelet hyperreactivity. She has a keen interest in the application of microfluidic devices in thrombosis & haemostasis. She has developed an endothelialized microfluidic device, the Endo-chip, to aid in the diagnosis and testing of novel treatments for endothelial thromboinflammation.
