Wallace R. Persons Endowed Professor of Engineering
Case Western Reserve University
Dr. Anirban Sen Gupta is the Wallace R. Persons Endowed Professor of Engineering, with Full Professor tenure in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Cleveland, Ohio, United States. He received bachelor’s degrees in Chemistry (B.Sc. HONORS) and Chemical Engineering (B. Tech.) from the University of Calcutta (Kolkata), West Bengal, India during 1992-1998. He traveled to the US in 1998, and received his MS and PhD in Chemical Engineering with polymeric biomaterials focus from the University of Akron, Ohio, USA, 1998-2003. He also gained valuable industrial experience at Guilford Pharmaceuticals (Baltimore, Maryland) and Procter & Gamble (Cincinnati, Ohio) in translational biomaterials. He then underwent post-doctoral training at CWRU with Prof. Roger Marchant in the area of hemocompatible device coatings. Dr. Sen Gupta started his faculty position as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering at CWRU in 2006 and was promoted to Full Professor with tenure in 2017. Research in the Sen Gupta laboratory spans the areas of thromboresistant coatings for device hemocompatibility, bioartificial platelet mimetics for hemostatic applications , targeted nanomedicine systems for vascular drug delivery, and surface-engineered dielectric microsensors for coagulopathy diagnostics. These diverse research areas involve strong collaborations within the US, as well as internationally, and is supported by funding from NSF, NIH, DoD, DARPA, State of Ohio, and Case-Coulter Translational Research Partnership. Dr. Sen Gupta has also co-founded a biotech startup, Haima Therapeutics, for translation and commercialization of technologies developed in his lab. Dr. Sen Gupta serves in leadership and organizational roles in several academic societies, and serves as a member of the editorial team in several peer-reviewed journals including Biomaterials, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering. Dr. Sen Gupta is deeply committed to providing inclusive and equitable mentorship to all trainees and researchers in his laboratory.
