PB0914 - Prevalence of Thromboembolic disease associated with hospitalization in Hospital de Clinicas-Uruguay from January 2021 to December 2022

Background: Venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) is a serious, frequent, and preventable medical complication in hospitalized patients .
A large percentage of VTE occurs due to hospitalization, maintaining the risk in the 90 days following discharge. Although both mechanical and pharmacological thromboprophylaxis is effective in reducing the prevalence of VTE, compliance rates are low both nationally and internationally.

Aims: To assess the incidende of VTE associated with hospitalization at the Hospital de Clínicas- Montevideo – Uruguay, in the period January 2021-December 2022 and its correlation with the use of thromboprophylaxis.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, retrospective study was carried out in patients who were admitted to the Hospital de Clínicas and whom during hospitalization presented with VTE, or patients who were admitted with VTE, with a history of hospitalization in the previous 90 days. The risk factors for VTE and correct compliance with the indication for thromboprophylaxis were analyzed.

Results: Of 14,914 admissions in the aforementioned period, 68 patients were diagnosed with DVT and/or PE associated with hospitalization. 39 patients were diagnosed during hospitalization and 29 were diagnosed at admission but had a prior hospitalization in the last 90 days. The incidence of VTE associated with hospitalization at the Hospital de Clínicas is 0.45%. 4.5/1000 patients had VTE associated with hospitalization in the 2 years studied, which constitutes a incidence of 2.25/1000 patients per year. 65% of patients received adequate thromboprophylaxis.

Conclusion(s): The prevalence of VTE associated with hospitalization at the Hospital de Clínicas in the period January 2021-December 2022 is approximately 2 thromboses per year per 1000 patients.
