PB0931 - Disparities in prevalence and mortality rates among patients with pulmonary embolism in China

Background: The incidence of PE in Asian populations was believed to be significantly lower than in Western populations. However, the real prevalence, mortality rates, and disparities in PE in China are still lack of nationwide data and evidence.

Aims: we used the national database of patients records, aiming to elucidate the prevalence and mortality rates of PE to fill the gap in the epidemiology of PE in the Chinese population and provide evidence to support the targeted reduction of PE disease burden.

Methods: We analyzed data from the National Database in China to investigate the prevalence and in-hospital mortality rates of PE computed and stratified by age, gender, and geography.

Results: During the 12 months period between January and December 2021, the estimated prevalence was 21.05 (95% CI 20.97-21.12) per 100 000 population. The estimated mortality rate was 1.51 (95% CI 1.49-1.53) per 100,000 population. The prevalence of PE was higher in male patients (21.37 [95% CI] per 100 000 population) than in female patients (20.71[95% CI] per 100 000 population). The mortality rates prevalence and mortality rates increased with age. Disparities of prevalence and mortality rates were shown within age and geography.

Conclusion(s): A large number of pulmonary embolism population with high mortality rate were recorded in China, which is much higher than previous reports. The prevalence and mortality of PE showed disparities in terms of gender, age and geography. To achieve the goal of healthy ageing and to reduce potential economic and social burdens that could accompany rapid population ageing, it's necessary to implement thromboprophylaxis and optimize clinical pathways of diagnosis and treatment to improve the quality of care for older patients.
