Background: Among Brazilian fauna species, snakes of the genera Bothrops and Crotalus are responsible for the highest frequency of potentially fatal snakebites. The frequency and potential severity of snakebites in tropical and subtropical countries, in addition to the difficulties encountered in managing them, motivate this simple study that also aims to bring to light a still neglected public health problem.

Aims: To evaluate hemostatic disorders in victims of bothropic and crotalic accidents before and after administration of antivenom, and according to the severity of the accident.

Methods: Routine clinical and laboratory data were obtained from the medical records of 15 patients who were victims of bothropic (n=7) or crotalic (n=8) accidents treated at an Emergency Hospital, in Belo Horizonte - MG, Brazil. The severity of each patient was determined by clinical and laboratory data, and by the number of antivenom ampoules used. Informed consent was obtained and the study approved by local Ethics Committee.

Results: Data analysis revealed that the vast majority of victims were male, with crotalic accidents being the most serious (Table 1). When the results of routine tests that evaluate hemostasis were compared before and after the antivenon serum, a tendency towards normalization of PT, aPTT and fibrinogen was observed in patients victims of snake bites of both the Bothrops and Crotalus genera. (Table 2).

Conclusion(s): The data analyzed together allowed us to conclude that snakebite, bothropic or crotalic acidentes, are associated with hemostatic disorders of varying severity; crotalic accidents proved to be more serious compared to bothropics; and the use of antivenon tends to normalize the results of laboratory tests indicating an evident benefit to patients. In this context, rapid admission of the patient to a specialized service for appropriate treatment is mandatory.
