PB0290 - Status of von Willebrand disease in a cohort of Colombian patients 2022-2023

Background: Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common coagulation disorder, in which the activity of von Willebrand factor (VWF) is altered quantitatively and/or qualitatively (1), which affects platelet aggregation and adhesion. (2). In Colombia it is one of the most frequent orphan diseases (35.4%) (2) lowering the quality of life (3), affecting both men and women, with a higher prevalence in women (1). Its main symptoms are characterized by hemorrhagic events following an injury, as well as spontaneous bleeding (6).

Aims: The aim was to describe the current situation of patients with VWD.

Methods: It is a descriptive retrospective study in which 248 patients between 2022-2023 diagnosed with VWD in a health service provider institution (Integral Solutions SD).

Results: Of the 248 patients, the most common VWD type was type I with 55.2%, followed by type II with 31.1% and 5.2% for type III. The median age was 23 years (3-79) and the gender with the highest prevalence was female with 73.4%, principally concentrated in the southwestern region.
61% of patients had a measurement of ≤50IU/dL of VWF:Ag, 80% had a measurement of ≤50IU/dL of VWF:Rco and 80% had factor VIII activity between a range of (10–50)IU/dL. There were 2(0.9%) spontaneous bleeding in the men population and 10(18,2%) women with the presence of menorrhagia.

Conclusion(s): It was evident that VWD in this cohort has a similar behavior in frequency and disease type in accordance with what was reported by Stonebraker et al (7) in their analysis of 121 countries. In the analyses carried out, it was evident that there is no significant difference by gender in the VWF:Ag, VWF:Rco and FVIII measurements. However, we can conclude that in women there is a greater impact on the quality of life since the intensity of bleeding during the menstrual period increases.
