PO18 - Deep venous thrombosis during pregnancy

Background: Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) during pregnancy is associated with high mortality, morbidity, and costs.

Methods: We studied the clinical profile, and evolution of patients who presented a deep vein thrombosis in pregnancy and who were hospitalized in the department of internal medicine of the university hospital Hédi Chaker in Sfax over

Results: Seven cases of DVT during pregnancy were reported (2%). The mean age of these patients was 33 years (range 22-43 years). Three women (42.3%) had a family history of DVT. Five patients (71.4%) had a personal history of DVT: one episode (4 cases), 2 episodes (1 case).
DVT occurred during the first trimester of pregnancy in 5 cases, and during the third trimester of pregnancy in 2 cases. Venous thrombosis occurred in the lower limb in all cases: external iliac vein (2 cases), common femoral vein (2 cases), deep femoral vein (2 cases), superficial femoral vein (4 cases), popliteal vein (4 cases) and sural vein (1 case).
The etiological investigation revealed RPCA in 5 cases (71.4%), confirmed by the presence of factor V Leiden in only one case. In 2 cases, DVT was secondary to primary SAPL. Protein S deficiency was noted in 2 patients, but was not controlled after pregnancy.

Conclusion(s): Women are at increased risk of VTE during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Treatment and prevention of VTE in this patient population is necessary.
