PB1223 - A study of the mood state for mothers of children with hemophilia

Background: The treatment of hemophilia has advanced dramatically and is turning into a controllable disease with improved life expectancy. On the other hand, the psychosocial issues of mothers of children with hemophilia have not been well studied. Previous studies have indicated that co-dependence due to close contact between mother and child hinders the child's independence. It is necessary for mothers to maintain the mental health of their children in order to promote their independence. Therefore, in this study, we examined the psychological aspects of mothers of children with hemophilia, especially their mood state.

Aims: This study reports on the assessment of psychosocial issues, especially their mood state in mothers of children with hemophilia.

Methods: We evaluated 14 mothers (median age of 44) of hemophilia patient who has been continuously visiting our outpatient clinic since 2016. A clinical psychologist had interviews with patients and/or families independently of doctor’s medical examination, and measured mood and emotion state by POMS2 (Profile of Mood States Second Edition). We assessed the Total Mood Disturbance (TMD) scores and each factors of POMS2, and compared them with the results from 5 years ago.

Results: Their TMD scores averaged 49.4, which was in the same "average" range as the general female population in their 40s. Both their negative and positive mood states showed an average profile. In the individual profiles, three individuals had higher negative mood states or lower positive mood states. Compared to five years ago, their TMD scores showed no change, but many mothers improved in the "vigor-activity" factor.

Conclusion(s): By supports of hemophilia care team, the health-related quality of life in hemophilia patients and families was greatly improved. We would like to continue to provide supports for the psychosocial issues of mothers of children with hemophilia.
