PB1236 - Comparative Analysis of Hepatitis B, C and HIV Incidence in Patients with Bleeding Disorders; Single Centre transmission

Background: This study aimed to detect the trends in the prevalence of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs), due to being regular recipients of blood and blood products especially in the developing countries to treat bleeding disorders.

Aims: This study aimed to detect the trends in the prevalence of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) in blood donors and Inherited bleeding disorder patients.

Methods: The research employed a retrospective cohort study design, spanning six months period, to analyze the medical records of patients. Demographic, clinical and laboratory analyses included HBsAg, Anti HCV and HIV screening tests. Statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics was applied to identify significant associations with blood donors to assess the prevalence of TTIs in this cohort.

Results: In this study, a comprehensive group of 856 patients diagnosed with HBDs, with a median age of 19.7±14.42 years, was enlisted and compared to 591,820 blood donors. Among donors, 6.6%, 5.7% and 0.09% were tested positive for HBV, HCV and HIV respectively. Gender distribution among patients, 79.8% were male, and 20.2% were female. The detected rates of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV in these patients were 1.6%, 13.9%, and 0.4%, respectively. Within the patient population, 90.6% had a history of receiving plasma & its products, factor concentrates 30%, and 20% had received packed red cells. With a significant P-value of.05, the prevalence of HBV, HCV, and HIV was significantly greater in hemophiliac than in blood donors (Table 1).

Conclusion(s): The overall positivity rate for TTIs were revealing a noteworthy concern within this patient population. The prevalence of HCV was significantly elevated in individuals with hemophilia as compared to blood donors, emphasizing the vulnerability of this subgroup to infections. These findings underscore the importance of vigilant screening and monitoring of TTIs in patients receiving such blood products.
