Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) can be mostly preventable, and the patient-centered self -management would possibly improve patient outcome.

Aims: The study aims to investigate patients' awareness of VTE, their willingness and the barriers of self-care with digital tools.

Methods: Patients with VTE older than 18 years of age were invited to take part in focus groups from Chinese PLA General Hospital between Oct 26th, 2023 and Dec 7th, 2023. We developed a mobile VTE Application (mVTEA) for VTE patients for self-management. Patients commented on the components and usability of mVTEA, desired new function for self-care after trying on site. An inductive thematic analysis of responses was performed.

Results: 12 patients (aged 18-87 years old, average 50±19 years) participated across 4 focus groups. The following themes emerged: theme 1 identified patients' needs for information and support at diagnosis, anticoagulant, and exercises rehabilitation; theme 2 identified the desire and barriers to accessing health care after discharge with digital tool; theme 3 identified the appropriate thromboprophylaxis approach throughout the disease course (Figure). The drug reminder, timely communication with doctors, easy for use, low price of digital tool were the patient's priorities.

Conclusion(s): Results highlight the need of patient education for those at high risk to address the outcome of VTE and the thromboprophylaxis; also, the need for self-care with the cost-effectively digital tool.
