Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant reason leading to morbidity and mortality. Factors contributing VTE are either genetics or acquired causes such as immobilization, cancer.

Aims: The researchers aimed to study the epidemiology of VTE including its clinical characteristics such as types of VTEs, factors contributing to VTE, comorbidities including treatments in order to data of Thai population.

Methods: A cross-sectional study by collecting data retrospectively from electronic medical record (EMR) who were admitted due to venous thromboembolism at Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Medical center (MSMC), for a period of 10 years from 1st January 2012 to 31st December 2022.

Results: A total of 10 years, there were 512 patients who met the criteria. The mean age of the patients was 62.14 years (SD 28.92), female was predominant (61.52%). The most frequently diagnosed patients were pulmonary embolism (54.67%), followed by deep vein thrombosis (23.86%). Factor affecting development of VTE was active malignancy (44.73%). Eighty-three percent of patients were treated with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH).

Conclusion(s): Cancer was the most common cause of VTE. LMWH was the most commonly prescribed drug in VTE.
