PB1464 - Experience with direct oral anticoagulants in hematological malignancies at the Hematology Service of the Clínicas University Hospital. Montevideo-Uruguay

Background: The use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients with hematological malignancies is increasing as new indications for their use are approved and studied. They are widely used in the treatment of non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) and in patients with cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE). However, oncohematological patients have been under-represented in studies supporting the use of these drugs in this population.

Aims: Perform a descriptive analysis of patients with oncohematologic diseases who have the indication for using direct oral anticoagulants in the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Unit at the Hematology Department of the Hospital de Clínicas in the last 6 months.

Methods: Descriptive observational study was performed in the patient population of the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Unit at Hematology Department of the Hospital de Clínicas from June to December 2023. Inclusion criteria were patients >18 years, with a diagnosis of oncohematologic disease and an indication for direct anticoagulant therapy. An SPSS v10.0 spreadsheet was created with the variables analyzed. The statistical analysis included quantitative and qualitative variables, expressed as percentages and medians. Informed consent was obtained from patients.

Results: From June to December 2023, a total of 395 patients with oncohematologic diseases were under outpatient follow-up at the Hematology Department. Of these, 18 patients received DOACs (4.6%). The characteristics of the study population and the results found are detailed below. (Table)

Conclusion(s): The use of DOACs in clinical practice is increasing with the approval of new indications and the development of evidence to support their use. Nearly 5% of oncohematologic patients at the Hematology Department were treated with DOACS, which allows us to share our experience of safety and efficacy in this patient population.
