PB1473 - Factors associated with portal vein thrombosis in liver cirrhosis

Background: Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a complication in cirrhotic patients which indicates the severity of disease. Several risk factors have been associated with pathogenesis and progression of PVT.

Aims: This study aimed to identify the risk factors which determine the development of PVT.

Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2012 to December 2022 at HRH Princess MAHA Chakri Sirindhorn Medical Center. Our study was approved by ethic committee of Srinakharinwirot university (SWUEC/E/M-006/2021). The patients were categorized into 2 groups; PVT and non-PVT. Factors associated with PVT were evaluated.

Results: Electronic medical records were reviewed, gathered, and analyzed. Of 279 patients were enrolled in this study. The categorized to PVT group (n=28) and non-PVT group (n=251). The mean age of all participants was 56.29 years (SD 12.72). All patients were diagnosed by computerized tomography. Six patients were classified to acute PVT and 22 patients were classified to chronic PVT. Most patients were asymptomatic. Factors associated with PVT in cirrhosis were ascites (OR 11.91, 95%CI: 4.02-35.30, p < 0.001), hepatitis C (OR 3.49, 95%CI 1.14-10.63, p=0.028), Gastric varices (OR 3.28, 95%CI: 1.05-10.29, p=0.042), MELD-Na (OR 1.11, 95%CI: 1.01-1.23, p=0.027) and alcohol (OR 0.21, 95%CI 0.07-0.64, p=0.006), after multivariate analysis.

Conclusion(s): Factors associated with portal vein thrombosis were ascites, gastric varices and hepatitis C.
