Background: Preeclampsia (PE), a serious disease of pregnancy, is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) later in women's life. Hypertension, high body mass index (BMI), and a hypercoagulability state are common factors for PE and CVD.

Aims: The study aimed to evaluate lipid profile, D-dimer (Di-D) and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) plasma levels, and thrombin generation in Brazilian women with a history of PE to assess the cardiovascular risk.

Methods: A total of 202 women who were pregnant between 2008 and 2016 were enrolled in the study: 101 developed PE, and 101 had normotensive pregnancy. Lipid profile was assessed by colorimetric enzymatic method, thrombin generation by Calibrated Automated Thrombogram (CAT) method, and Di-D and PAI-1 levels by immunoturbidimetry and Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), respectively. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to assess the normality of continuous variables. Continuous variables that presented symmetric distribution were described through mean. Comparison of mean values between groups was performed using Student's t-test. Variables with asymmetric distribution were described through median and interquartile ranges. Comparison of medians was performed through Mann-Whitney U test. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. The statistical software used was IBM SPSS Statistics 26.

Results: Table 1 presents the results obtained for both groups of women.

Conclusion(s): PE and CVD share a predisposition to vascular and metabolic diseases. History of PE associated with endothelial changes, increased LDL levels and blood pressure, and changes in body composition may favor the emergence of CVD. The trend towards an increased risk of CVD in women with a history of PE shows the need to monitor them throughout life to reduce the impact of PE on CV risk.
