PB0703 - Eltrombopag in Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP): A Comprehensive Study of a Diverse Patient Cohort

Background: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an immune-mediated condition marked by a transient or persistent reduction in platelet count to less than 100x109/L. Although a benign disease, ITP can lead to life-threatening bleeding complications.

Aims: This study delves into the transformative impact of Eltrombopag, on the management of persistent and chronic ITP. Specifically, it evaluates the clinical efficacy of this drug in improving platelet counts with a focus on identifying trends of improvement in this cohort.

Methods: A retrospective study (January 2023 to December 2023) on 272 persistent and chronic ITP patients of various ages and genders was conducted. Demographic, laboratory, and clinical details were collected at baseline and follow up visits of patients treated with Eltrombopag. Statistical analyses including descriptive tests were analyzed by SPSS version 21.

Results: Our cohort included 272 ITP patients with a mean age 40 years (range 5-75 years), mean platelet count 30x109/L ± 10x109/L. Moreover, these individuals transitioned from acute to persistent ITP (n=92), persistent to chronic (n=163) and chronic to refractory (n=17) (Table 1). The common bleeding symptoms observed were easy bruising (n=149, 55%), petechiae (n=54, 20%), nose bleeds (n=68, 25%), gum bleeding (n=81, 30%) and (n=137, 70% of the) female patients had menorrhagia. These symptoms resolved with the use of Eltrompobag. The total rate of response was 94%, and the median duration of response defined as the number of the platelets above 50x109/L was 14 (interquartile range: 14-28) days. Few adverse events were reported including bloating, headache, cough, and weight gain in 10% of patients.

Conclusion(s): Eltrombopag demonstrated satisfactory responses in improving platelet counts, but close monitoring is essential for potential risks. Furthermore, it highlights Eltrombopag's significant efficacy across diverse demographics, supporting its integration into personalized treatment plans.
