Background:

Objective: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a critical, life-threatening condition where timely and accurate diagnosis is pivotal for prompt intervention. Recent advancements in biomarkers have opened new avenues for the early detection of PE.

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the potential diagnostic value of soluble fibrin monomer (FM) in PE.

Methods: A cohort of 210 suspected PE patients underwent contrast-enhanced spiral computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) for diagnosis, forming PE and non-PE groups. Simultaneous measurements of soluble fibrin monomer, D-dimer, and other relevant indicators were conducted.

Results: The experimental group exhibited significantly elevated levels of soluble fibrin monomer (FM) compared to the control group (P < 0.001). FM demonstrated a sensitivity of 0.745 and specificity of 0.672 in diagnosing PE. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.7263, indicating commendable diagnostic performance. Combining FM with DD, FDP, ATⅢ showed a sensitivity of 0.5213 and specificity of 0.9138 in PE diagnosis, with an AUC of 0.7715.

Conclusion(s): This study delved into the potential diagnostic value of soluble fibrin monomer in PE, highlighting its high sensitivity and specificity as a promising biomarker. FM, when combined with DD, FDP, ATⅢ, showed enhanced specificity. Nevertheless, further extensive studies and clinical validation are imperative to affirm its practicality and clinical application in real-world diagnostic scenarios.
